The Learned Helplessness: An Artist's Perspective
Share
Have you ever heard the phrase 'learned helplessness'? It might sound a bit serious, but stick with me - I promise to keep it light and playful!
Learned helplessness is a psychological term that refers to the state of giving up because of repeated failures or setbacks. It's like when we try something new, fail a couple of times, and then decide we're just not cut out for it. And guess what? I've got a fabulous flea story to illustrate this concept!
Imagine a flea - tiny, energetic, and able to jump up to 200 times its body length. Now, picture this flea inside a jar, hopping around and hitting its head against the lid over and over. After enough painful bonks, the flea learns its limit and stops jumping as high. Even when the lid is removed, the flea continues to jump at the 'jar height', never reaching its full potential again.
This is learned helplessness in action. The flea, like many of us, has allowed past failures (or in this case, headaches) to dictate its future actions.
As an artist, I understand that failure is part of the process. Sometimes, creating what some might call 'ugly' pieces is an essential part of learning and growing. But here's the thing: beauty is subjective. What may seem beautiful to me may not resonate with you and vice versa. Every piece of art is a reflection of the artist's journey, their failures, their learnings, and their victories.
I've had my share of failures, both in art and life. But instead of letting them confine me, I use them to fuel my creativity. I refuse to be that flea, and my art is a testament to that!
My artwork is a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, and textures - a maximalist playground where boundaries are blurred and rules are made to be broken. Each brush stroke is a rebellion against the invisible 'jar lids' that limit our potential. Every vibrant color I use is a reminder not to let past failures dim our present and future.
Creating art is my way of saying, "Hey, let's not be like that flea! Let's not allow past setbacks to define how high we can jump." It's about breaking free from self-imposed limitations and embracing the endless possibilities that life offers.
So, the next time you see my art, remember the flea story. Let it inspire you to jump higher, push harder, and believe in your ability to reach the sky. After all, art, like life, is a playground of possibilities - if we're bold enough to explore it!
And remember, each splash of color, each layer, and every pattern in my artwork is there to sprinkle happiness into your space, transforming it into a place where anything feels possible.
So, don't be a flea. Reach for the stars and let the sky be your limit!
